Overview

Tansen Izakaya 炭鮮居酒屋 in Damansara Jaya offers an intimate glimpse into the charm of a Japanese street eatery, wrapped in cozy ambiance and subtle wood accents. Situated at No. 36, Jalan SS 22/25, this izakaya brings together the rustic warmth of charcoal grilling with the social ease of a casual dining spot. The semi-open kitchen allows diners to witness the care behind each dish, enhancing the overall sensory experience.

Signature dishes like Chicken Kushiyaki and Clam Sakamushi showcase expertly grilled flavors with a smoky depth, highlighting the quality of their charcoal techniques. The Tansen Prawn and Teriyaki Squid provide fresh seafood options that stand out, while side staples such as Garlic Fried Rice and Chawan Mushi add comforting textures and nuanced flavors to the meal. Pairing these with a selection of Sapporo beers or other alcoholic beverages creates a perfect harmony, inviting long conversations and relaxed evenings.

The space favors a young, social crowd who appreciate a lively yet intimate setting. Soft background music and warm lighting weave a welcoming atmosphere, although the small size and occasional high noise level during busy times reflect the vibrant energy rather than detract from it. Staff attentiveness can vary, particularly during peak hours, but the passion for well-prepared kushiyaki and consistent taste keeps guests returning.

Its strategic location in Petaling Jaya makes it a convenient stop for both casual dinners and small group gatherings, although parking may require a bit of planning. Overall, Tansen Izakaya balances tradition with approachability, delivering smoky grilled delights and fresh seafood in an inviting, focused setting. It caters well to those seeking authentic izakaya flavors without the fuss, making it a notable choice in the local dining scene.

This place really feels like a little Japanese street eatery — cozy vibes, thoughtful décor, warm lighting, and soft background music all on point. The semi-open kitchen was also nice, being able to watch the chefs at work. Loved the overall dining experience, especially the wood accents that added a nice touch to the space. That night’s highlight was the abalone porridge — so flavorful and unforgettable! Food overall was tasty, and with a couple of beers we ended up chatting for hours. Such a great spot for young people to hang out.

Dropped by for dinner. Ambience was cosy enough and service was fine, portion was slightly small. The seating process felt a little unorganised (the waiter/waitress seems unsure of how to handle this?) . Overall the food was just average — nothing particularly memorable. Not one I’d go out of my way for but still fine for a casual stop.

Food is good, not the best izakaya I've had but also considered very good. Salmon sashimi and seafood is very fresh. They offer a wide range of alcoholic beverage as well. The place is small and could be hard to get a waiter's attention. Noice level is very high when there are large group of customer chitchatting and laughing.

Good taste, well marinated meat. Rice slightly hard, thus lack chewy texture of the short grain type. Downside green tea is not in the house. RM6 is pricey. Expect to spend about RM30/pax for basic meal. Quiet environment drg lunch l, which opens for 2 hours only. Good enough time for a simple meet up and chat. Parking is a headache. Best aim straight to Atria parking.

Part of the Izakaya Group. Consistent quality, one of the better kushiyaki I've had around the city. Properly charcoal-grilled and smoky, extensive overall menu.

Came here for a casual, low-key lazy birthday dinner. No cake, or candles just good old izakaya food with my forever buddy and our minions. Food is perfectly decent and tasty, but not spectacular. Wide selection of dons, yakitori and tempuras but limited maki rolls. No sushi or hand rolls. Long beverage list ranging from a variety of high balls to Japanese canned sodas. We sat at the private seating section which was nice and quiet - away from the weekend drinking crowd.

Overall, the food was good, the service was quick, and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. The Wagyu MB9 skewers had a slightly chewy texture and the rich flavor typical of Japanese restaurants. I also ordered the salmon sashimi rice bowl. The salmon was fresh and juicy, which is my favorite. Some of the seafood/ingredients are imported from Japan, and I liked their yuzu drink. Both flavors of rice balls were delicious, the mushroom and tofu dish was also very tasty, and the meat skewers were good too, although the portions were a bit small. Considering the quality of the food, the prices here are not expensive.

Welcome to Nippon, just in Kuala Lumpur. A wonderful place for food, good mood (play for drinks and food), peaceful. Even as vegan and vegetarian they have some nice options especially if you like fungus. Would love to come back. ありがとうございます!
